H & L Asian Market at 5300 Rivers Ave in North Charleston is a solid spot for anyone looking to explore Asian groceries outside the mainstream supermarket aisles. It’s primarily a grocery store specializing in Chinese and broader Asian food products, with a mix of fresh produce, pantry staples, and cookware that appeals to both daily cooks and international food enthusiasts.

The market has a fairly clean and organized feel, though at times the shelves can run low on popular items, which can be a bit frustrating if you’re chasing a specific ingredient. The staff tends to be polite but can feel a bit distracted, so it’s helpful to be patient and persistent when seeking assistance or clarifications.

One standout feature of H & L Asian Market is the deli corner offering pho. Locals who love Vietnamese broth will appreciate the flavorful, well-priced pho here — it’s become a go-to for those craving authentic comfort food without having to leave the area. This makes the market not just a shopping destination, but also a quick stop for a casual, affordable meal.

The store’s produce section gets good remarks for carrying items that aren’t typically available at larger chains, especially niche Asian vegetables and fresh herbs. Customers who seek out hard-to-find sauces, spices, and snacks will find the variety both overwhelming and exciting.

For those in the area, especially cooks looking to experiment or maintain their home cuisine roots, this market fits well into the local scene. Its location comes with a downside–the neighboring asphalt operation generates unpleasant odors and some wear on the parking lot, which somewhat diminishes the otherwise straightforward shopping experience.

Shoppers who value the availability of specialty cookware will find solid options here too, such as well-made woks. The store attracts repeat customers who rely on the consistency and quality of these kitchen tools.

Timing your visit outside of peak hours might improve the atmosphere, making it easier to browse and consult staff. Overall, H & L Asian Market serves a practical role for locals hunting down authentic Asian ingredients and affordable ready-to-eat options, balancing a no-frills approach with the treasure-hunt appeal of international markets.

Experience was nice. The item that we were looking for was " SOLD OUT " BUMMER!! We really had to get the staff on the problem because it seems as if we were being dismissed. So great place, clean some what stocked. We will keep y'all in touch for a revisit.

The pho in the storefront deli at this market is our favorite in the greater Charleston area. Not only is this the best broth and ingredient combination, it's very fairly priced. We will continue to make special trips here over many other options when the mood strikes.

I love this market! Great produce and lots of nitch foods you can't pick up at Walmart. They do really well getting translation stickers on most products but if you have an allergy and aren't sure double check with an employee. Its no fault of their, but it sucks that they've put a disgusting asphalt place next to it because it stinks outside and the parking lot is getting torn up by big trucks

We stopped into purchase a wok that will be used to cook outside. This is the second one that we have purchased from this particular store. One of them we gave is a gift . The one we got today is huge and made of really good material. Everyone is nice when you walk in. The store is always clean and the shelves always seem to be stocked pretty well . This particular store has almost everything you would think should be in a store like this - from kitchenware to seafood to spices to meds. You can also get a hot meal in their deli type area with seating . There is lots of fresh seafood , on ice, in the back in the back of the store. The store is kid friendly and shares the parking lot with many other stores. It is in a shopping center right off of Rivers Avenue. Plenty of assessable parking is available.

My favorite Asian Market in Charleston!! When we lived in Georgia we used to shop at Super H Mart. It was basically this but 3 times the size. We loved that place. But it was so expensive!! This market may be smaller, but it has everything we are looking for and more! What's more? Did i mention it is MUCH cheaper than our old Asian Super Market. I did not. This is an excellent spot to shop for Asian goods.

This Asian grocery store is truly a hidden gem—tucked away but absolutely worth seeking out. From the moment you walk in, you're greeted by the rich, aromatic scents of spices and herbs that hint at the culinary treasures waiting inside. The store is impressively stocked with an incredible variety of items that are hard to find in typical supermarkets. From specialty noodles and exotic sauces to fresh produce and frozen dumplings, the selection is both diverse and authentic. Whether you're looking for ingredients to make traditional dishes from scratch or simply hoping to explore new flavors, this store has something to offer every adventurous cook. They also carry unique snacks, teas, and sweets from across Asia, making every visit feel like a mini cultural exploration. The prices are excellent—far more affordable than larger chains—and the quality of the goods is consistently high. The staff is friendly and helpful, always ready to point you toward what you need or recommend something new to try. If you enjoy cooking international cuisine or just want to expand your pantry with hard-to-find ingredients, this store is a must-visit. It's one of those places that, once you discover it, becomes a regular stop on your shopping routine.
